Being a woman in Islam
The place of women in Islamic society is one of the most controversial topics in Islam. The situation of women as it exists today in most of the Islamic countries, and likewise in Islamic communities in countries with a non-Muslim majority, is, to put it mildly, open to improvement. We are thinking here of young girls that are given in wedlock at a very early age, of polygamy, of women that are divorces without any explanation, of women who after reporting an act of rape are thrown in prison, ...

Muslims tend to become very defensive about this subject. The usual argument is that these phenomena are “culturally” embedded and have nothing to do with Islamic law. At the foundation of Islam Muhammed gave rights to women such as they had never enjoyed before, and thus improved their situation in a revolutionary way... thus say the Muslims.

Our aim in these pages is to clear up, through citations from a number of texts, the “misunderstandings” that exist concerning the place of women in Islam, and to puncture a number of “reasoned” interpretations adduced in relation to this topic.
